The Gallery Exterior

The outside of the Gallery building provides some unique spaces for art that can be viewed at all times of the day or night. It is the only public art museum in Australia with a major exhibiting gallery facing the street.

Exterior panels

The dramatic curved facade of the Gallery building is a public exhibition space. It features 14 panels on the front face of the building, and a further 13 around the sides.

The panels are located where windows originally existed when the building was used as the Council administration centre from the mid 1950s to late 1980s.

Bert Flugelman, Spiral and Wave (1977)

An iconic stainless-steel sculpture by renown Illawarra artist Bert Flugelman graces the Gallery's front garden.

This work was originally located in the forecourt of the first Gallery building on the corner of Burelli and Keira streets, which is now home to Wollongong Youth Centre. It was relocated when the Gallery moved to its current location in 1991.

Warwick Keen, Cultural Connections (2018)

A striking work by Aboriginal artist Warwick Keen can be found on the rear of the Gallery building, overlooking the Wollongong Arts Precinct.
