General

No - the Gallery is free for everyone to enjoy! We also offer free guided tours, artist talks, and other events.

Some workshops do have a cost.

Only trained Guide Dogs and other registered assistance animals are allowed in the Gallery.

Yes, you can bring your pram into the Gallery.

We also have lift access to most levels so people with prams can visit our different Gallery spaces.

Please make sure your pram is always supervised and controlled by an adult.

Yes. We have an accessible entrance ramp and lift access is available to most levels of the building.

We also have a wheelchair you're welcome to use while in the Gallery. Please ask our front desk staff to use the Gallery's wheelchair.

We have a variety of spaces and our exhibitions change regularly throughout the year.

There are multiple exhibitions on display at any time, and they will typically show for a few months.

No. To show respect and avoid damage, we ask that you do not touch the works on display.

Please help keep us artworks in great condition for years to come by admiring them from afar.

In some cases, there may be interactive artworks for visitors to enjoy. There will be clear signs in place to let you know how to interact with the piece.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to talk to one of our friendly Gallery staff.

No. You must not bring food or drink into the Gallery, as they may damage the artworks.

We do serve food and drink at exhibition openings and some events.

We serve wine at most exhibition openings and some events, but visitors must not bring their own alcohol into the Gallery.

Vaping or smoking are not allowed at any time while you're at the Gallery. Any visitors doing this will be asked to leave.

Filming and photography

Visitors can take photos or video of our Gallery spaces or the artworks on display unless there is a sign in place that says otherwise. This is allowed for personal use only.

If you want to take photos for events or commercial purposes, different rules and applications apply. Please see the question 'Is professional or commercial filming and photography allowed?' below for more information.

You can book to have your wedding ceremony and / or reception at the Gallery, which includes photography and filming permissions.

You cannot use the Gallery for a photography shoot without an approved venue hire application.

Professional or commercial filming and photography is only allowed with prior approval.

Please contact Council's Events team to discuss your proposed shoot. You will also need to submit a Filming and Photography application.

Events

Yes, and we would love to be part of your special day! You can book to have your wedding reception at the Gallery.

Yes, you can! From weddings to cocktail events or business meetings, we’re happy to help you organise your next event at the Gallery.

Yes, the Gallery can be hired for events outside our normal hours.

Tours

Yes, we do!

We offer a few types of tours. Some require bookings, but others don't.

  • Public tours and floor talks often don't require bookings, and are usually free to attend. Check our Events Calendar for any upcoming public tours you can join. Note, the calendar listing will tell you if you need to book, or if any costs apply.
  • Group tours (eg schools or community groups) must be booked in advance. Please contact us to make a booking enquiry, or see our Group Visits and Tours page for more information.
  • Self-guided tour sheets or exhibition worksheets may be available for some exhibitions. These are usually designed for schools, but can often be used by other groups as well. Check our Education Resources page or contact us to learn more.

We have a range of tours for different groups and ages.

For tours that are open to the public, details of any age or audience restrictions will be noted in our Events calendar.

Artist Information

You must submit an exhibition proposal which will be considered by the Wollongong Art Gallery Program Committe.

Your proposal will be assessed by the Gallery’s Program Committee for its relevance and potential interest to local and broader audiences.

Proposals are assessed quarterly.

We will contact you once a decision has been made about your proposal.

We work closely with the artist and their works. This includes:

  • Exhibition installation assistance
  • Invitations, advertising, and promotion
  • Exhibition catalogue
  • Opening event for the exhibition
  • On-site insurance.

Catalogue production, additional publicity, freight or installation costs, and touring of the exhibition must be negotiated for each exhibition.

The support available may also depend on whether you and / or the Gallery are successful in securing external funding for your project.

The program is usually planned up to two years ahead.

Our 2024 program is fully booked.

Planning for our 2025 program is currently on hold due to operational changes. Once details have been finalised, we will give an update on the availability of 2025 opportunities.

We have a maximum of 20 exhibitions each year.

Yes! Our Community Access Gallery is available for local artists and groups to share their works with the community. You can hire this space for a four-week period.
