Popular Versus Culture
Georgia Banks
6 June - 6 September 2026
Melbourne artist Georgia Banks revels in the slippery terrain between celebrity, authenticity and artifice. Developed during her research residency at The Andy Warhol Museum, Popular Versus Culture examines how cultural, emotional and economic value is performed and consumed.
In dialogue with selected works from the Gallery collection, Banks extends Warhol’s fascination with fame, fandom and the market into the hyper-mediated conditions of today. Rather than resist the mainstream, she mines it for meaning, revealing how legacy, success and spectacle have become interchangeable currencies in our image-saturated age.
Commissioned and presented by Wollongong Art Gallery.
